Welcome
You'll answer everyday questions out loud, like a relaxed conversation. Questions appear on screen and there are no right or wrong answers. It takes about 5 minutes.
Before you start
- Use a MacBook, Mac or Windows PC with Chrome or Edge. Phones and tablets can't be used.
- Find a quiet room and close the door. Turn off the TV, music and fans, and mute notifications.
- Use a wired headset. Bluetooth headsets and AirPods can't be used.
- Sit at a table, facing the screen, with your face about 30 cm (a foot) from the microphone. Stay in that position throughout.
- Speak at your normal volume. Don't type or tap the table while you answer.
Your recording
Your microphone is recorded for the whole session, including between answers. The audio and a transcript are used for speech technology research and shared with the organisation that commissioned this project. Our service providers (Microsoft Azure for storage, Deepgram for transcription and Groq for choosing questions) process them on our behalf. Please don't say your full name, address or other details that identify you or anyone else. You can stop at any time with "End session".
Before we start
We'll check your microphone and your room. This takes about 30 seconds.

Step 3: Sound checkClick Start sound check and stay quiet for a moment. When asked, read this aloud at your normal volume and pace:
"The best part of my weekend was a long walk by the river with an old friend. We stopped for coffee, talked about our families, and watched the boats go by."
How to fix this
How it works
A question will appear. Answer out loud, as fully as you like. When you've finished, just stop. The next question appears after a few seconds. There's no button to press.
